Super Typhoon Rai: Women and Girls Can’t Wait
Super Typhoon Rai struck the Philippines on Thursday leaving hundreds dead and more than 400,000 displaced. Known locally in the Philippines as Typhoon Odette, the storm impacted more than 6 million women and girls in the Philippines and Malaysia. 1.4 million women and girls are in need of immediate sexual and reproductive health care and at least 200,000 are at risk of violence.
Many cities are without electricity, water, or any communication, making it that much more difficult to reach those in need of care.
In Malaysia, the typhoon resulted in torrential downpours that displaced 61,000 people. The BBC reports that in both countries, the risk of floods and landslides is high. Wind speeds reached more than 160 MPH and left behind “complete carnage.” Mass evacuations have begun and leaders from both countries have pledged millions of dollars toward relief efforts.
Though the extent of the damage will only be revealed with time, we know that women and girls can’t wait. Women and girls do not stop giving birth or menstruating for disasters.
