Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a harmful practice in which a girl’s external genitalia are cut, mutilated, or removed. FGM is a brutal assault on girls’ health and often results in chronic infections, sexual dysfunction, childbirth complications, and lifelong trauma. Some girls even die as a result of FGM.
UNFPA works to end FGM for good. We provide care to survivors, educate parents and communities on the harms of FGM, and advocate for policy changes and reporting mechanisms where necessary.
Tragically, recent funding cuts are threatening progress. This year, 4 million girls are at risk of being cut. By 2030, an estimated 68 million girls could suffer from FGM.
