An Opportunity for Supporters 70 ½ Years Old and Older

You can give any amount you wish (up to a maximum of $105,000) this year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as USA for UNFPA without having to pay income taxes on the money. Gifts of any value made through your IRA, amounts under or up to $105,000, are eligible for this tax benefit, and you will be making a truly lifesaving difference for women and girls relying on UNFPA services. You may hear this gift option referred to as an IRA charitable rollover, or see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.
Benefits of Gifting Through an IRA

Benefits of Gifting Through an IRA

  • If you are required to take minimum annual distributions from your IRA, this gift can satisfy all or part of that obligation for the year.
  • You will pay no income taxes on an IRA gift. The transfer does not generate taxable income or a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions each year.
  • If you make a withdrawal from your IRA to provide a gift to a charitable organization, that withdrawal from your IRA won’t count as income, which can reduce your annual income level. This might have further benefits, like lowering Medicare premiums and decreasing the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.
Common Questions

Common Questions

When do I need to make my gift?
We must receive and deposit the gift by Dec. 31 for your donation to qualify for the calendar year. Please be sure to request your IRA gift in a timely manner so that it may be disbursed, received, and deposited before the end of the calendar year.
Will this gift count for my required minimum distribution (RMD)?
Yes. Beginning the year you turn 73, you can use a gift to a charitable organization to satisfy all or part of your RMD.
I am turning 70 ½ in a couple of months. Can I make this gift now or do I have to wait?
You must be 70 ½ on the day you make this gift, so please wait until then.

IRA Gifts For Those 59½ Years Old or Older

If you are at least 59½ years old, you can still take a distribution from your IRA and then make a gift without penalty. If you itemize your deductions each year, you can take a charitable deduction for the amount of your gift.
