Director of Partnerships

USA for UNFPA, established in 1998 and headquartered in New York City, is the US national committee for UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health and rights agency. We work to deliver a world where women become pregnant only when they want to (ending the unmet need for family planning); where giving birth is safe for every mother and child (ending preventable maternal deaths); and where women and girls live free from violence and harmful practices (ending violence against women).

TITLE: Director of Partnerships
REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer
LOCATION: Hybrid, Remote + New York, NY or Washington, DC areas strongly preferred
TRAVEL: Expected to spend up to 25% of the time for partner meetings
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full-Time 
SALARY RANGE: $105,000 – $140,000, commensurate with experience

 

POSITION SUMMARY 
Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Partnerships (Director) provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction to advance USA for UNFPA’s mission to promote the health, dignity, and rights of women and girls around the world by supporting the lifesaving work of UNFPA. The Director is responsible for resource mobilization and engagement with the U.S. private sector, including corporations and private foundations, to increase the annual revenue for the organization through integrated multifaceted partnerships.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES 
The Director will be responsible for developing and executing a strategy to raise revenue from U.S. based corporations and foundations in support of UNFPA’s work. The Director will primarily have a new business development remit, identifying and engaging new potential private sector partners for USA for UNFPA and will also manage a small portfolio of existing partnerships. The Director will also play a lead role in strengthening the operational systems and processes to ensure USA for UNFPA can work efficiently and effectively with U.S. based partners to deliver results for women and girls and achieve the organization’s revenue goals. The Director will:
Strategy
  • Develop and execute a private partnership engagement strategy that builds the capacity of USA for UNFPA to engage in multi-dimensional partnerships with the private sector and increases financial contributions from corporations and foundations.
  • Enhance USA for UNFPA and UNFPA’s organizational understanding of challenges and opportunities regarding the needs of corporations and foundations to meet UNFPA mandates and support its programs.
  • Review UNFPA programs and strategies regularly to stay updated on program developments.
Research and Partner Identification
  • Oversee and manage prospect research into trends, competition, and funding sources to strategically drive the development of a strong partnership portfolio.
  • Collaborate with USA for UNFPA team and UNFPA colleagues to identify and respond to grant opportunities, including the drafting of grant proposals and funding pitches to prospective and existing private sector partners.
  • Oversee and comply with organizational procedures (e.g., due diligence) to select partners from the corporate and foundation community and develop any new systems processes to support strategic partners’ identification, engagement, and development.
Account Management
  • Lead effective partner account management, deploying best practices and building the capacity of USA for UNFPA to engage in multi-dimensional partnerships with the private sector.
  • Lead the account management of existing partnerships, developing and implementing partnership stewardship roadmaps that ensure partnership renewal and growth.
  • Lead engagement with prospective partners and execute tailored engagement plans and customized communication to secure funding.
  • Prepare and deliver compelling pitch materials tailored to the corporate or foundation partner that showcases UNFPA’s value proposition.
  • Draft concept notes, grant proposals, compelling letters of interest, reports and other written materials to support and sustain partnership stewardship and growth.
  • Develop, review, and manage progress on partnership agreements including reporting, financial tracking, and progress against strategic partnership activities.
  • Support other priorities as identified by the CEO.

 

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS 
The Director of Partnerships is a strategic big-picture thinker who knows how to bring institutional partners together to achieve impact. The Director has a passion for engaging the business and foundation community and a belief in the transformative potential of the private sector to achieve the global sustainable development goals.
The candidate for this position is inspired and motivated by USA for UNFPA’s mission and should ideally possess the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:
  • Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree highly preferred
  • At least five years’ experience, seven years preferred, in developing and managing strategic partnerships with the corporate and foundation community that led to an increase in revenue
  • Proven record of achievement in conceiving, brokering, managing, expanding, and leveraging partnerships with the corporate and foundation community over time
  • Strong analytical skills (financial, planning, operational)
  • Exceptional presentation and communications skills and ability to distill complex issues into structured frameworks tailored for the foundation and corporate communities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated project management skills
  • Creative, flexible, highly accountable, and results-focused
  • Adaptability and solutions-oriented
  • Proven success in tapping into new areas of philanthropy and partnerships
  • Collaborative nature and ability to multi-task while remaining calm and kind under pressure
  • Capacity to learn from experience, adapt as needed, co-generate new ideas, and listen and work with others to shape the emerging future of partnerships at USA for UNFPA.
  • Holds a talent for bridging differences, finding common ground, and building relationships with corporate and foundation partners as well as with colleagues at UNFPA

  • Understanding and familiarity of the UN an asset
