Period poverty is a global crisis.

Today, 800 million women and girls will have their period, but 1 in 4 of them will not have the period products, clean water, or clothing to take care of themselves. In crisis zones like Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan, more than 60% of women and girls cannot manage their period. 
The consequences are devastating:
  • Stigma and myths about menstruation prevent women and girls from participating in school, work, religious ceremonies, and social life, putting them at risk of falling behind
  • Without proper period products, women and girls are more likely to develop infections. Left untreated, these infections can lead to infertility, chronic pain, pregnancy complications, and even death.
  • A girl’s first period greatly increases her risk of violence, especially child marriage. Sometimes, when women and girls cannot afford period products, they will resort to transactional sex, which exposes them to abuse, exploitation, sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancy.

Each UNFPA Dignity Kits costs just $15 to assemble and contains everything a woman or girl needs to care for herself, move freely, and live with dignity, including menstrual pads, clean clothing and underwear, soap, laundrey detergent, and more.
Kits are customized for the region in which they’re distributed. For example, in regions where women and girls are expected to cover their hair, the kits contain a head scarf. In colder climates, the kits have warm clothing and blankets. When we deliver kits to older women, they include an air mattress to improve sleep and ease body aches and pains.
